Moor means: A member of a Muslim people of mixed Berber and Arab descent, now living chiefly in northwest Africa’
So logically its not racist because its describing a race but the way people have described it over the years and how black people were seen in the times of Shakespeare, it is percieved as racist.
Jodie, Moor does not always refer to the muslim people of Berber/Arab decent but can also be applied to anyone of Arab or African descent. The name Moors derives from the ancient tribe of the Mauri and their kingdom Mauretania.
'Although the play is very much concerned with racial difference, the protagonist's specific race is not clearly indicated by Shakespeare. Othello is referred to as a "Moor", but for Elizabethan English people, this term could refer either to the Berbers (or Arabs) of North Africa, or to the people now called "black" (that is, people of sub-Saharan African descent). In his other plays, Shakespeare had previously depicted both a Berber Moor (in The Merchant of Venice) and a black Moor (in Titus Andronicus). In Othello, however, the references to the character's physical features do not settle the question of which race Shakespeare envisaged.' Saif
Oh and Trashfairy??? If you use quotation marks around it, it will not be taken as racism as you yourself are not calling them that but are merely quoting a term. It is usually used as a description of a black person or an arab but is also often used as an insult. Hope this helps, Saif
jodies answer was WAY better, you just copy and paste text off encyclopeadia sites to try and make yourself look brainy and 'cool' but you are NEITHER, you are just arrogant. End of.
