Great idea for a class to blog!
I wanted to add that in India's film industry has just made a Hindi adaptation of Othello - entitled Omkara
The setting is modern day India and deals with the rough gangs and corruption among villagers. It's pretty violent and rough, so I wouldn't recommend it for a class viewing :-)
However,it maintains the essence of the characters of Iago, Othello and Desdemona. They're recognizable and still alive. Love, jealousy, envy are human traits.
I think that's what makes Shakespeare's work so wonderful. It has an ability to cross cultures, times and hits at the human level.
